GeneralHow does Eat Smart Kiwi work

Eat Smart Kiwi is a food diary that helps you identify which foods are making you feel sick, tired, or otherwise unwell. You can also use it to identify foods that boost your energy, mood, work performance, or anything else you'd like to improve. It works by tracking your food intake and symptoms, and then using machine learning to identify patterns in your data. It then uses these patterns to give you personalized recommendations about which foods to eat and avoid.

How many diary entries do I need to get good recommendations?

You can usually get useful clues after a week, but we recommend sticking with it for at least a month to get reliable insights.

How many conditions should I track?

The more you track, the more value you get. It doesn't take much longer to track a few extra conditions, so we recommend tracking everything that interests you.

Can I use Eat Smart Kiwi on multiple devices?

Yes! There is an Eat Smart Kiwi app for both Apple and Android, or you can access it via the website on any browser. Your entries and recommendations will sync across all devices you are signed in on.

Is Eat Smart Kiwi just for sick people?

No! Even if you don't have any ailments, you can still use it to identify foods that boost your energy, mood, work performance, or anything else you'd like to improve. And even the healthiest of people usually have the occasional cold or headache that they'd like to reduce.

Where can I give feedback above the app?

You can fill out this form, or contact us at info@eatsmartkiwi.com. We'd love to hear from you!

Do I have to pay to use Eat Smart Kiwi?

Keeping a diary is completely free, with unlimited entries, including food, symptoms, sleep, exercise, notes, and other features. If you want insights and correlations about your data, then there is a small fee for a monthly or annual plan. There is a free trial for these plans and you can cancel at any time. You can find details on the profile screen.

On Android, go to the Profile screen and tap 'Manage subscription', then cancel in Google Play. On iOS, subscriptions are managed by Apple...to cancel a subscription, open the Settings app, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap Eat Smart Kiwi, then tap 'Cancel Subscription'. Note that deleting the app will not cancel your subscription.

Can I share my data with a dietitian or doctor?

Yes! As well as exporting your data to a PDF, you can also select the 'Share with Dietitian' option from the side menu and enter their name and email address. They can then create their own Eat Smart Kiwi account under that email address, if they don't already have one, and they will be able to view (but not edit) your data as if it were their own.

DiaryHow do I edit an entry after it has been added?

Locate the entry in the diary. Tapping or clicking on it will open an edit dialog where you can change either the time or the contents.

How do I delete an entry after it has been added?

Locate the entry in the diary and swipe right to delete it.

Can I track exercise?

Yes! An exercise entry can be added using the icon on the main diary screen. If it does not appear in the initial list, select "more options". You can also connect with a Fitbit or other tracker.

How do I integrate with Fitbit?

To integrate with Fitbit, open the side menu and select "Connect to Fitbit". Follow the on-screen instructions to log in to your Fitbit account and grant Eat Smart Kiwi permission to access your Fitbit data. Once connected, your Fitbit data will automatically sync with Eat Smart Kiwi.

Can I integrate with other fitness trackers?

Currently, Eat Smart Kiwi can integrate with Fitbit. On Android, it can also import data from Health Connect, thereby connecting it to any other smartwatch or app that writes to this platform.

How do I stop syncing my data with Fitbit?

This can be done from the Fitbit app. Tap your profile picture (top right), then tap 'your data in Fitbit', then scroll down and tap 'Manage connected apps'. You should see a list of all apps that are syncing with Fitbit, including Eat Smart Kiwi, and you can tap 'Revoke Access' to stop.

I no longer want to use Eat Smart Kiwi. How do I delete all my data forever?

You can delete your account and all your data by going to Profile (accessible from the side menu), and then choosing Delete Account and Data. This will delete all your data from our servers, and you will no longer be able to access it or log in to Eat Smart Kiwi. Note that this will not cancel any active susbcriptions. If you want to keep your data but just stop using the app, then you can simply uninstall it from your device.

Check-inHow do I add a condition to track?

When you first create a check-in, you'll be prompted to choose conditions to track. You can edit this list at any time by going to Settings (accessible from the side menu), and then choosing Add or Remove Conditions.

Can I create a check-in for just a subset of my tracked outcomes?

Yes. You can swipe right on any of your tracked outcomes to remove them from the check-in.

How can I stop tracking a condition?

If you just want to skip a condition on a single check-in, then swipe right to delete it. But if you want to stop tracking a condition on all future check-ins, go to Settings (in the side menu) and select Add or Remove Conditions. You can then add or remove conditions. This will not affect any existing check-ins.

What is the difference between removing a condition from a check-in, and marking it as zero (great)?

Marking something as zero (great) means exactly that - you weren't experiencing any problems with it at that time. Our analysis will then look at your food and drink leading up to that time and assume that it helped rather than hindered your condition. If you simply delete a condition from a check-in altogether, that means our analysis will ignore the check-in altogether when analysing for that condition. Generally speaking, you should only delete a condition from a check-in if for some reason you don't know how to score it. For example, if you were filling in a check-in for last week, then you might not remember how bad your stomach pain was at the time. Or perhaps you would want to delete eczema from a check-in because you aren't able to examine your body for signs of it at the time.

If I'm feeling great, do I still need to add check-in?

Absolutely! That's how we can figure out which foods (or lack of foods) might have contributed to you feeling great.

How do I track a new condition or symptom that is not on the provided list?

In the Manage Tracking screen (accessible from the side menu), enter the name of the new symptom or condition. If it is not present in the search results, then you will see the option to create it as a new condition.

When is the best time to add a check-in?

Whenever you want! However, we recommend adding a check-in at least once a day. It is also worth doing them after specific meals or activities that might influence your symptoms, and when you are feeling particularly good or bad. Remember to check-in when you feel good as well as bad, because this helps identify what contributes to positive outcomes as well as negative ones.

How do I see a history of a particular condition or symptom?

In the Insights screen, select the condition you are interested in. You will then see a graph showing how that condition has changed over time. You can also see a list of all the entries where that condition was tracked.

Food EntriesDo I need to record absolutely every ingredient in a meal?

Don't worry if you don't get every last herb and spice in that curry. The more detail you provide, the better we can analyze it. But the most important thing is just to record *something*.

Does it matter if I forget to record the occasional meal or snack?

No. The more data you enter, the better we can analyze it. But we know and expect that you will miss things from time to time, and our analysis takes that into account.

Do I need to record when I drink water?

Most people find it too time-consuming to record their water intake. If you suspect that your water intake is having an impact on how you feel, then it is worth entering it in, but otherwise it's fine to skip it.

How important is it to record the exact time that I ate or drank something?

Just an approximate time is fine. For slowly changing conditions, like acne, the time isn't important. For something more acute, like a headache, try to get it within an hour or two. The most important thing is to get the order of events right. We need to know if you drank that cup of coffee before or after you had that headache.

How do I add a new food that is not on the provided list?

When searching for a food, if the food is not present in the search results, there will be an option shown to create it as a new food.

Can I create a list of foods/ingredients commonly eaten together?

Yes! You can create a 'recipe' by selecting 'Recipes' from the side menu, and then tapping the '+' button. You can then add ingredients to the recipe, and when you eat that recipe, you can select it from the list of foods. This will automatically add all the ingredients to your food diary entry.

InsightsHow much does each condition contribute to the Overall Health scores?

To start with, all conditions contribute equally to the overall health scores. If you want to adjust this, you can do so from the Settings screen (accessible from the side menu).

What time window does the analysis consider when looking for correlations?

The analysis looks at 6 different time windows: 1 hour, 3 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 72 hours and 168 hours (1 week). It considers all food and drink within the time window prior to the symptom. So if you had a headache at 3pm, and the time window was 24 hours, then the analysis will look at everything you ate and drank between 3pm yesterday and 3pm today. The time window with the strongest correlation is then used to calculate the score for that food or drink.

Can I restrict the analysis to only be based off recent entries?

Yes! To do this, select the "adjust analysis period" option on the Settings tab.

Can I track my macros, such as protein intake?

Yes! On the Insights screen, when "Overall Health" is selected, there is a "Nutrients Per Day" section near the bottom that shows your total intake of various macros each day.
