Does pear cause gas?

Why pear causes gas

Analyses of common fruit flag apple, pear, and watermelon for fructose in excess of glucose — the pattern most linked to poor fructose absorption. Pear also sits with the fruits that contain sorbitol (a polyol), measured in 15 fruits at about 0.5–6 g per 100 g of fresh weight.[1]

What is not absorbed in the small intestine reaches the colon, draws in water, and is fermented by bacteria. Hydrogen and other gases stretch the bowel and feel like wind.[2][3]

In a challenge study, 10 g of sorbitol (or mannitol) raised gut symptoms in people with IBS. Healthy volunteers produced hydrogen too, but they reported fewer symptoms. Ten grams is a research dose — more than a small pear snack — but it shows why a large, ripe pear (or two) can be windy, especially if your gut is sensitive.[2]

Lowering overall FODMAP intake has been shown to reduce flatulence in people with IBS.[3]

Fibre adds to the picture. Pear flesh and skin are fibrous. Extra plant fibre is useful for many guts, but a sudden large serve means more fermentation in one sitting.

Ripe, juicy pears are often sweeter and easier to eat quickly. Juice and canned pears in syrup are a different sugar delivery from a whole fruit you chew.
